Workshops
Our workshops follow a series of movement exercises to unleash the creativity within each participant. By sharing our approach to contemporary dance, we hope to demystify the choreographic process. Our workshops are meant to be FUN and offer creative tools that allow participants to make their own artistic choices. These classes are adaptable to all levels of experience and age.
Our workshops are based on the following themes:
-
This section offers a range of tools to relate to music through the body. We will explore how we can embody a sound, its quality or the emotion evoked, and experiment with the dialogue between our movement and the music. How can the music be seen and the dance heard?
-
When two bodies share a space and time, there is an inherent relationship between them. This section explores the intuitive sensations and actions that emerge from this connection and how these can influence our artistic choices in improvisation and creation.
-
A fundamental aspect of our artistic practice is the relationship between the body and the imagination. We will explore how we can transform our bodies through imagined shapes and textures, and use this process to create movement sequences.
-
While most choreographers work alone, the As They Strike collective is distinguished by its co-creation practice, which comes with its own benefits and challenges. We will offer participants the opportunity to experience different collaboration styles and a variety of creative roles.
-
In order to reach diverse audiences, the collective works primarily in public spaces, rather than in theatres. We will share how a space can both inspire and restrict the creative process - there are joys and surprises when working within constraints!
We offer a variety of options in terms of time and structure:
A series of five 90 minute workshops, each covering one of the above themes
A series of two 120 minute workshops, or a choice of one:
Bloc B: Improvisation through the themes of dance and music, and dancing together
Block B: Creation through the themes of the body and the imagination, creative roles and collaboration, and space and adaptation
One 90 minute workshop based on one theme
